2021 NFL Mock Draft: Zach Wilson rises to Jets at No. 2 in 3-round projection
By Randy Gurzi
Back in 2017, the Chicago Bears moved up from the No. 3 pick to the No. 2 overall selection to take Mitchell Trubisky out of North Carolina. The pick was met with immediate groans from the fan base and since then, it’s only gotten worse.
Trubisky has been up and down throughout his career and while he has a record of 29-21 as the starter, it’s well known that they have won games in spite of him rather than because of his play. Making matters worse is the fact that the Bears took Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, which could go down as one of the biggest whiffs in draft history.
Chicago now has to go back to the drawing board to find another option under center and in this mock, they end up with the fifth option in Mac Jones from Alabama. Jones was originally the backup to Tua Tagovailoa with the Crimson Tide and took over in 2019 after Tua’s hip injury. He finished that season with 1,503 yards on 68.8 percent passing with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 14-to-3.
Jones then took another step forward in 2020, completing 77.4 percent of his passes for 4,500 yards. He threw 41 touchdowns against just four picks and did enough to convince the Bears to take a flier on him here.
