2021 NFL Mock Draft: Zach Wilson rises to Jets at No. 2 in 3-round projection
By Randy Gurzi
When the Indianapolis Colts said goodbye to Philip Rivers this offseason, they knew they were going to have to make a move for a quarterback. Sitting at No. 21 in the draft made it hard to plan on getting a rookie, but they decided to make a move before then.
The Colts ended up swinging a deal for Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles and this is a move that could end up paying off for them. Wentz took a nosedive as a player after signing a huge contract extension with Philly, but he did show back in 2017 that he can get it done at a high level.
Wentz ended that season on IR with a torn ACL and the team around him won the Super Bowl but there’s not much doubt that they could have won it all with him under center given the level he was playing at. He also had that success with Frank Reich as his offensive coordinator, who will now be his head coach with the Colts.
There’s a chance Wentz and Reich can rediscover their magic together and they use the 21st pick as a way to help Wentz get more comfortable in the offense. One thing that hurt his confidence with the Eagles was their decline in offensive line play. Indy has a decent line but can use a new offensive tackle after Anthony Castonzo decided to retire.
Replacing him will be Samuel Cosmi, the Texas offensive lineman who has first-round talent written all over him. His ability to hold off pass-rushers will help give Wentz the time he needs in the pocket.
