Scouting Report. Alabama. Devonta Smith. Pick Analysis. WR. 6. player. 54

This mock has fallen in an interesting way where Justin Fields is still available when the Philadelphia Eagles are on the board at No. 6. If this were to happen, they would be seriously tempted to grab him since the early returns on Jalen Hurts don’t show that he would be significantly better than Fields.

Of course, in the real draft, there would surely be some phones ringing even before this selection if Fields were to slide — meaning they wouldn’t even have to make the tough decision. However, in this mock, there are no trades so we have to weigh the options. Clearly, Fields has a higher ceiling than Hurts but the rookie still has enough talent to compete in the NFL and this front office seems willing to give him a shot to prove himself.

So we stick with the former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback and just surround him with talent by taking Devonta Smith. The Alabama wideout won the 2020 Heisman Trophy Award after putting up one of the more impressive seasons out of a wide receiver in recent memory. He’s a technician who can win at all three levels, and finished with 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns on 117 receptions.

This would be the second season in a row the Eagles used their top pick on a receiver but considering how bare the cupboards were, it doesn’t feel like overkill. Also, Smith would pair nicely with Jalen Reagor and could actually help the TCU product develop since he wouldn’t be the focal point of the offense.
