2022 NFL free agency: Jamal Adams to Seattle Seahawks
*Updated Oct 1st – Adams signs 4 year contract extension to stay with Seattle worth $70 million*
The Seahawks gave up an awful lot to acquire up-and-coming All-Pro safety Jamal Adams from the Jets — two first-round picks and two mid-round picks — and it’s not exactly good business practice to execute that kind of deal for a one- or two-year rental player.
Adams, 25-years-old, is the kind of player Seattle would love to build around as it looks to revamp what was an underachieving defense in 2020. Sure, Adams dealt with injuries over the course of last season, and some could argue he wasn’t quite as prolific as he was when he first broke into the league with the Jets.
That said, Adams remains a cornerstone piece, and those don’t come around very often.
Adams is one of those players who can do a bit of everything. He’s more than good against the run when playing down low in the box, has the ability to cover elite-level tight ends.
And with a Seahawks-leading 9.5 sacks in 2020, Adams offers up a lot in the pass-rush department, too.
It wouldn’t be shocking to see general manager John Schneider try rebuilding a similar edition of the former “Legion of Boom” Seattle once had during its perennial Super Bowl contending years.
While there’s likely to be a good deal of turnover within the secondary for the Seahawks the next few seasons, Adams could take over that role of defensive captain Seattle is sorely lacking.
