2022 NFL free agency: Baker Mayfield to Cleveland Browns
Entering last season, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was going to be under the microscope after some so-so seasons following him being drafted first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
But Mayfield now has the reputation of being the quarterback who finally broke the Browns’ elongated playoff drought. And while he’s still seeking out his first Pro Bowl nod, there’s little doubting he’s helped change the culture in Cleveland and has turned the team into a legitimate playoff contender.
It’s generally a bad idea for teams to let quarterbacks like that walk.
On top of that, Mayfield appears to have turned the page on the turnover issues that plagued him over the first two seasons at the pro level. Just take a look at his touchdown-to-interception ratio since his drafting:
- 2018: 27-to-14
- 2019: 22-to-21
- 2020: 26-to-eight
The Browns could elect to use a fifth-year option on Mayfield, which might be the route they’d like to take. After all, this would help ensure Mayfield’s rise up the quarterbacking charts last season wasn’t a one-year wonder.
Either way, the former No. 1 overall pick won’t be going anywhere.
