2022 NFL free agency: Davante Adams to NY Jets
The Jets are likely to grab one of the top quarterbacks in the 2021 NFL Draft, perhaps someone like BYU’s Zach Wilson. The eventual plan would be to surround a young signal-caller with added weapons in the next few years even if it means they have to overspend.
Few options to bulk up a wide receiver room that’s pretty bare right now would be better than the Green Bay Packers’ Davante Adams, who is coming off a first-team All-Pro 2020 campaign where he led the league with 18 receiving touchdowns.
While Adams had something of a down year in the end-zone department the previous year with just five scores, the 28-year-old was able to put in three consecutive double-digit touchdown seasons between 2016 and 2018.
Granted, going from catching passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a second-year signal-caller like Wilson would potentially hinder Adams’ receiving numbers, especially if Wilson doesn’t progress as many think he will.
But one could bet the Jets would be willing to use a good chunk of their projected $135.7 million in cap space for 2022 on a player of Adams’ caliber. Particularly if he helps a young quarterback like Wilson grow.
As much as Green Bay would like to retain Adams, the lure of a rebuilding Gang Green squad in New York with plenty of money would be too good for the star receiver to pass up.
