2022 NFL free agency: Jaire Alexander to Green Bay Packers
*Updated Oct 1st – Packers pick up 5th year option on the Pro Bowl corner*
Once again, the Green Bay Packers could face a lengthy overhaul to their secondary, unless fans are adamant about having cornerback Kevin King back in 2021.
Not likely.
It’s been a while since the Packers have had any sort of consistency within their defensive backfield. Yet, nickel cornerback Jaire Alexander has been solid enough to keep around, especially after his first Pro Bowl nod last season.
That’s the kind of production Alexander will look to continue as he heads towards a defining contract season on his current rookie deal.
Alexander, a former first-round NFL Draft pick, still has the ability to command a fifth-year option, and Green Bay could elect to go this route. But nickel corners rarely receive the kind of money on new deals as boundary cornerbacks do, so it should be much easier for the Packers to retain him on a relatively team-friendly deal.
With the league now fully trended to three-wide pass-heavy formations, nickel backs have essentially become starters, and Alexander is one of the best up-and-comers in this department.
