Chicago Bears: 3 Cap casualty candidates for 2021 offseason
2. Jimmy Graham, Tight End
Jimmy Graham had a resurgent season in 2020. He singlehandedly had a better season than the entire Chicago Bears tight end unit did in the entire 2019 season. He had 50 catches for 456 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. His touchdowns were the most since 2017 when he made the Pro Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks.
As good of a season he had, can we expect a repeat? Yes, he did it despite struggles at quarterback. His season could’ve been even better if the quarterbacks did their jobs. There were a number of occasions in which he was open to gain big yards or score touchdowns but the quarterback missed on the throw.
Apparently, Graham has been talking to Wilson and saying good things about Chicago. Even if his work helps bring the talented quarterback to the Bears, I’m not sure he’ll be there to reunite with his good friend.
The Bears have Cole Kmet, who looked down the stretch like a tight end who’s ready to take over as the starter. He got more involved in the offense later in the season and looks like he did a good job of learning the nuances of the position from Graham.
There is another option for the Bears. If they do acquire Wilson they could go to Graham and work out a new, lower-paid contract. Graham is at the end of his career so he could decide to play one more season with his close friend and see how far they go. He can then ride off into the sunset.
