John Johnson III brings physical edge to Browns secondary
The Cleveland Browns are a team on the come-up, and safety John Johnson III brings physicality and strong instincts to their secondary.
Last season the Cleveland Browns defense, while talented, needed a boost in the secondary, and they have found their guy in Rams safety John Johnson III. According to Mike Garofolo, Johnson signed a three-year, $33.75 million deal with the Browns, giving them a proven leader.
This move is a move that previous Browns management would not have done in fear of overspending. But this team is different. This is a new Browns team that wants to be physical and get players at the right price to build a contender. Johnson III is that kind of player.
As a Ram, Johnson was an instrumental part of a team that won the NFC Championship in the 2018 season and appeared in Super Bowl LIII, a loss to the Patriots. Additionally, according to Pro Football Focus, Johnson was graded third among all active safeties.
John Johnson III joins a talented secondary that can push the defense over the top.
The Cleveland Browns defense has talent in the secondary, including Ronnie Harrison and Grant Delpit. However, they did not have another safety alongside Harrison to deliver a blow while also snag the ball. John Johnson III does exactly that and this will make defensive coordinator Joe Woods happy.
Given how the AFC North has always been a physical division, the Browns need to match that edge. While they won a playoff game last season against the Steelers last year, one year doesn’t automatically equate to contender status. It takes a resume of success to be given consideration, and Johnson III can enhance that.
The Cleveland Browns are no longer a team that can be considered a doormat. They added one of the best safeties in the game to their roster, and at this point, things are looking up for a team that broke through last season and is hoping to take the next step.
