Jaguars signing Shaquill Griffin addresses glaring need in secondary
The Jacksonville Jaguars needed help in the secondary, and signing Shaquill Griffin is one step towards fixing the problem.
To say that the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Shaquill Griffin to help address a weakness in their secondary after a 1-15 season is a complete understatement. The former Seahawk will likely be placed in the starting lineup and be expected to thrive after signing a three-year, $40 million deal per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Jaguars essentially had no choice but to make a move like this. They have a fine quarterback in Trevor Lawrence coming to the team next month in the draft. He has some weapons on the offense, but any good quarterback needs personnel on the other side of the ball to help carry the load. Furthermore, in this day and age where offenses are throwing the ball, other than the front lines, the secondary is key to success.
In Griffin’s case, he comes in with the experience of playing for a team that has been a contender for much of his career in Seattle. Additionally, he will be teaming up with C.J. Henderson in Urban Meyer’s defensive scheme and look to limit the passing of teams not only in the AFC South but within the conference and around the league as well.
Shaquill Griffin is just one step in the Jaguars rebuilding process, but it is an upgrade for sure.
Over his career, Shaquill Griffin has logged 203 tackles and six interceptions, three of them coming this past season. While his name may not be mentioned among the game’s best defensive backs, his play style fits what Urban Meyer’s team needs. Plus, the job is not finished in Jacksonville.
While Griffin and Henderson and newly-signed safety Rayshawn Jenkins are likely to be in the starting lineup, there is still the draft to come, and Jacksonville needs more than just a quarterback. This is just year one of a rebuilding plan, and to build a contender, it takes time and patience.
Shaquill Griffin is a wise investment by the Jaguars, but there’s plenty of work left to be done. Still, Jacksonville did address a need and got a solid contributor in the process.
