2021 NFL Draft: 6 Prospects with biggest bust potential
1. Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
What team doesn’t want an athletic quarterback with a rocket arm? In today’s NDFL a guy who can make plays with his feet and arm commands dollars. Just ask Taysom Hill of the New Orleans Saints who signed a 4-year $140-million contract. Of course, there’s Deshaun Watson, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Kyler Murray. All of whom make dynamic plays with their arms and legs. That’s why quarterback-needy teams covet North Dakota’s, Trey Lance.
At his Pro Day, Lance measured 6-3, 224 pounds and showed off his cannon arm, dropping dimes. He also showed off his movement skills in and outside the tackle box. In college, Lance was perfect, literally throwing just 28 touchdowns to zero interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 1,100-yards and 11 scores. With his size, arm strength, athleticism, and upside there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be taken in the first round, but not top 5.
For starters, he’s raw in terms of footwork which will negatively impact him if he’s thrown into the fire right away. He has a bit of a windup when he throws, his arm drops lower than you’d which was evident at his Pro Day.
All in all, he’s a developmental starter, a player you sit for most if not all of his rookie season. Players like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackosn were the same type of prospects, they got picked at 10 and 32 respectively. Lance should be taken outside of the top 10, but he won’t be.
