25 best players to never make a Pro Bowl: 12. Jim Plunket, QB

Career stats:

  • 25,882 yards
  • 164 TDs

Best season 1983:

  • 2,935 yards
  • 20 TDs
  • 82.7 passer rating

Admittedly enough, the numbers aren’t impressive. To be honest, Jim Plunket spent long stretches in his career being a below-average quarterback, to say the least.

He did, however, put together a few seasons that should have gotten him a Pro Bowl selection. Unlike today’s NFL where players can roll out of bed and throw for 4,000 yards with 40 touchdowns without even trying, the 70s and 80s were a time where defense ruled and running backs were king.

With teams using quarterbacks most times as an ancillary piece, guys like Plunket were never given the opportunity to just chuck it all over the field whenever they wanted. Despite the restrictions, his 1983 season was a particularly strong one as he threw for 2,935 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Plunket also helped lead his team to multiple Super Bowls wins over the course of his career. The 16-year vet is the only player in history to both start and win numerous Super Bowls without being named a Pro Bowler.

In the case of Plunket, his career numbers are awful. He did after all throw more interceptions than touchdowns. Still, he was good enough to pick up at least one Pro Bowl selection during his long and successful career.
