25 best players to never make a Pro Bowl: 8. Chad Pennington, QB

Career stats:

  • Yards 17,823
  • 102 TDs
  • 64 INTs

Best season 2002:

  • 3,120 yards
  • 6 INTs
  • 104.2 passer rating

Chad Pennington has an interesting placement on this list. Now he certainly wasn’t a great player, but for long stretches, you could confuse him for one. His 2002 season is a good indication of that and the main reason why he cracks the top ten.

On that aforementioned year, Pennington threw for over 3,000 yards and only six interceptions. What was most surprising about his Pro Bowl snub was that he led the league in passer rating with 104.2. Outside of 2002, Pennington had a few more Pro Bowl quality years including a 2008 campaign that saw him throw for over 3,600 yards. That year saw him drag his Miami Dolphins team to the postseason.

But, as was the case for most of his career, he never played well enough when you needed him most. In that 2008 playoff game, Pennington was horrific throwing one touchdown and a ridiculous four interceptions. To make matters worst, his passer rating was 53.7.

Still, even with his playoff performances leaving much to be desired, the Pro Bowl is based off a player’s performance in the regular season. With that in mind, Pennington’s numbers when the lights weren’t at their brightest should have allowed him to make a Pro Bowl or two.
