The Chicago Bears have had a rotation of safeties playing opposite of Eddie Jackson. Adrian Amos, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Tashaun Gipson have been there the last three seasons. Gipson was the latest and is currently a free agent.

Even if the Bears sign Gipson, they need some depth at the position. Tyree Gillespie adds that depth. He can play both the free and strong safety spots, but will likely perform better as a box safety.

Gillespie has good athleticism and instincts for the position. IN high school, he played running back and returner as well as safety. At 6-2, 210 pounds he has the size you want for a safety.

Gillespie does a good job of reading and diagnosing a play and attacking. He takes good angles when going after the ball carrier. He keeps the action in front of him and has a good closing burst. Possesses the ability to make big hits and lodge the ball free.

He had a good week of practice at the Senior Bowl. He likes to step up in big games. Some of his best games came against Alabama.

In the box, Gillespie does a good job of finding himself around the ball. He runs downhill and sheds blocks well to make big hits.

Gillespie possesses good instincts and is athletic. He doesn’t possess great speed, though. That likely keeps him as the strong (box) safety. He could start his career contributing more on special teams but has the ability to quickly learn the NFL game and be a big contributor on defense.
