The Green Bay Packers don’t usually delve too deep into free agency but just in case, these players are still available and would make a mountain of sense.

What exactly is going on with the defending NFC North champions these days? It’s a franchise that doesn’t usually do much when it comes to bringing in veteran players. But the Green Bay Packers broke form in 2019 when general manager Brian Gutekunst, in his second season on the job, opened up the checking account and added outside linebackers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, safety Adrian Amos and offensive lineman Billy Turner.

Under head coach Matt LaFleur, the club has posted back-to-back 13-3 showings, won a pair of division titles and reached the NFC title game. But the team has yet to get back to the Super Bowl.

Meawhile, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky brings clarity to the “supposed-restructure” of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ contract. Does Green Bay have some money to spend in terms of adding a few experienced pieces? Regardless, here’s five performers who could bolster the roster.

5. TE Jesse James (Released by Detroit Lions)

The team did just re-sign veteran Marcedes Lewis via a two-year deal, $8 million deal (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter). The former UCLA standout was a first-round pick by the Jaguars in 2006 and now prepares for his fourth season with this organization. While he totaled just 10 catches for 107 yards and three scores this past season, he’s a standout blocker and that can’t be undervalued.

Meanwhile, the Lions parted ways with Jesse James after two seasons and he has been solid as a receiver and blocker. The play of 2019 first-round pick T.J. Hockenson made him expendable. Lewis, James, emerging Robert Tonyan and Jake Sternberger would make for quite the quartet.
