The Dallas Cowboys have started to make some moves in free agency but they could still land more players capable of helping them in the 2021 season

As has often been the case in recent years, the Dallas Cowboys have wete rather quiet at the onset of free agency. But then as they often do, they started to make moves during the second wave. Dallas came to terms with several players inclusion Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee but they still seem reluctant to make a huge splash signing or give out a long-term deal.

Part of the reason for this could be due to their current cap situation. According to OverTheCap.com, Dallas currently has just $10 million to spend and much of that should be dedicated to their incoming class of rookies.

However, that doesn’t mean they can’t still make some moves — as this front office has proven in the past they know how to move money around to free up space when needed. And with that being said, we look at three free agents who could help them in 2021 that are still available.

3. Alex Smith, Quarterback

While quarterback might not be atop many wishlists for the Dallas Cowboys, they should be in the market for an experienced backup. With Andy Dalton headed to the Chicago Bears, Dallas now has just Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci under contract.

Gilbert did play well in his one outing for Dallas but it would be a surprise to see DiNucci on the 53-man roster when the season kicks off. Even with the performance, Gilbert had against Pittsburgh, this front office likes to have an experienced player ready to go in case of an emergency which is why Alex Smith makes sense.

Smith was the No. 1 overall pick in 2005 with the San Francisco 49ers and while he never lived up to that status, he does have 167 career starts — and boasts a record of 99-67-1. He even spearheaded an NFC East title run for Washington last season, winning five of six starts after his inspirational comeback from a severe leg injury.

Clearly, Smith isn’t a franchise guy at 36 (will be 37 in May) but he can get the job done off the bench and steer the ship for a few weeks if needed.
