Miami Dolphins 7-round mock draft after trades with 49ers, Eagles
Even after recently re-signing veteran Elandon Roberts, it’s clear that the Dolphins need a future and depth at linebacker. It’s a spot that’s critical in the middle of a Flores defense and they need someone who can be a playmaker in every facet of the game at the position.
Cameron McGrone may not be that player right now but he has the tools to become that. The Michigan product needs to work on his eye discipline and reactions rather than relying on his athleticism but that athletic profile is what makes his upside so high. With some coaching, getting him in Round 3 could be a monstrous steal for the Dolphins.
Miami saw big defensive tackle Davon Godchaux depart and get a monster deal in free agency. While they were smart not to pay him that, they do need another massive presence in the middle of the defensive line. That’s where Tedarrell Slaton, especially as a fifth-rounder pick, could be super helpful.
Slaton is a behemoth at 6-5, 358 pounds and he has some impressive burst for a player his size. While not Aaron Donald by any stretch, he has some pass-rush value and the potential to be a high-quality run-stuffer. He’ll need to be coached with his feet to maintain better balance but the frame and strength for him to succeed and step into the Godchaux role are there.
Cornerback is far from a big need for the Dolphins but, at this point in the draft, you’re looking for value and sorting out the rest later. That’s why they look at a player like Robert Rochell from Centrail Arkansas and can’t pass up his value as a depth piece in the secondary.
Rochell has a nice frame and was a tremendous producer at corner in college with 38 pass defenses and 10 picks. He needs to bcome less handsy and could benefit from a move to safety. In any case, though, he’s a player with viable NFL skills that falls to the seventh round. But Flores and the Dolphins will find a role and reap the rewards.
