NFL: 30 greatest seasons from players 30 and older: 26. Brett Favre, 2009

Brett Favre was one of the very first quarterbacks I remember watching when I was growing up. He was a staple to the Green Bay Packers for the better part of a decade-and-a-half from 1992 to 2007.

With Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings, it was time for Favre to move on.

In an effort to keep him out of the division, the Packers dealt him to the New York Jets. After playing for the Jets in 2008, Farve joined the Vikings in his 19th NFL season. At the ripe old age of 40, expectations were low for Favre – who was coming off a very unspectacular season in New York that included 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. To the surprise of many, he once again proved he was still capable of being one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

With the Vikings in 2009, Favre started all 16 games and exceeded every expectation set for him. He compiled 4,202 passing yards and completed 68.4 percent of his passes to go with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions (the latter being the best mark since becoming a full-time starter in 1992).

Farve led his team to a 12-4 record and eventually to the NFC Championship game before falling short to the New Orleans Saints. He finished his career as the NFL’s all-team leading passer, but would later be surpassed by Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning.
