4. T Eric Fisher (Released by Kansas City Chiefs)

The offensive line of the Black and Gold has declined a bit in recent seasons and was certainly not up to par in each of the past two seasons. Along with the near-abandonment of the ground game in recent years, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did manage to avoid a lot of sacks with quick passes. But that only masked the problems up front.

Center Maurkice Pouncey has retired but versatile B.J. Finney is back after spending 2020 with the Seahawks and Bengals.  And the team has yet to make a decision on veteran left tackle Alejandro Villanueva. Meanwhile, the Chiefs cut loose tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. Could one or the other wind up in the Steel City?

3. CB Casey Hayward (Released by Los Angeles Chargers)

In 2019, the Steelers inked former Chiefs’ cornerback Steven Nelson to a three-year, $25.5 million contract (via Spotrac). He was a solid performer that first year and still efficient this past season but the organization was apparently interested in going in another direction and Pittsburgh’s financial issues played a part in his departure as well. The club saved $8.25 million on the salary cap.

While Mike Tomlin’s team re-signed promising Cameron Sutton, it also lost standout slot cornerback to the rival Bengals. Veteran Casey Hayward has 27 takeaways in nine NFL seasons with the Packers and Chargers and fits the bill when it comes to the Steelers’ opportunistic defense.
