Chicago Bears: 5 Offensive tackles to target in 2021 NFL Draft
If the Chicago Bears want to make a splash they could swing a deal to move up and get Penei Sewell. He is the most gifted lineman in this draft class and can easily replace Leno right off the bat. At 6-5, 325 pounds, he has the size you want.
Despite his size, Sewell is a good athlete. He has a quick first step which allows him to get off the snap quickly. He has good technique and always squares up to defenders. He has incredible balance.
Sewell has a wide base and has good footwork. He can easily adjust to whatever the pass rusher does. He stays square and turns the defender with ease. He gets to the second level quickly and has a good, hard punch to stop defenders.
If there is a negative on Sewell it’s that he doesn’t have that killer instinct. He does a good job with everything but he’s content with just beating you. He plays a physical game, but the meanness isn’t there. There are other offensive linemen who want to obliterate defenders. Again, look at Nelson who wants to bury you six feet under the field instead of just knocking you down. Sewell has the ability to annihilate defenders.
Sewell will enjoy a long, successful career (barring injuries of course). As he gets older and loses some of his quickness, he’ll easily be able to kick inside and be a good guard and extend his career.
Sewell was projected to go in the top five picks, but with the recent trades occurring, there are more teams looking for quarterbacks moving up. That means Sewell will drop a bit. If the Chicago Bears go for an offensive lineman and he’s available they should snatch him up.
