The Los Angeles Chargers signed Chase Daniel and this is an excellent addition in helping Justin Herbert improve.

After a sensational rookie season from Justin Herbert, the Los Angeles Chargers did their part in ensuring he’d have a terrific mentor behind him on the depth chart, signing journeyman backup quarterback Chase Daniel to a one-year deal.

Daniel brings 11 years of experience to the Chargers quarterbacking room and this will be his sixth NFL team during his long career. Daniel is the epitome of a backup quarterback, only starting five games throughout the course of his career (three with the Bears and two with the Chiefs).

With this addition, the Chargers gave their rookie quarterback one of the best mentors there is. Daniel isn’t going to be someone chasing Herbert for his job. He knows his role and he’ll do whatever he can to help Herbert be the best quarterback he can be.

Signing Chase Daniel was a smart move for the Los Angeles Chargers.

This is an important year for the Chargers. We see rookie quarterbacks hit a bump in the road during their second season (often referred to as a sophomore slump) and it’s key that this doesn’t happen with Herbert if the Chargers want any shot at overtaking the Chiefs in the AFC West.

Herbert won the AFC Offensive Rookie of the Year last year after throwing for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. He was sensational, but it’s important to continue to surround him with players who can mentor him and help him elevate his game even more. Chase Daniel can do that.

If Herbert suffers an injury or has to miss a handful of games, Daniel can be counted on to step in and play admirably. He’s only had to start five games in his decade-long career, but he’s appeared in 69 total games and is capable of leading the charge if need be.
