2021 NFL Draft: 7 Prospects whose success is tied to team fit
5. Amari Rodgers, WR, Clemson
Some teams want a guy that can do more than one thing, an X-factor weapon on the offense. Washington’s Antonio Gibson and the Jaguars’ Laviska Shenault Jr. were two guys with versatile skill-sets who proved valuable for their respective teams. Clemson’s Amari Rodgers is that guy. While he lined up as a wideout for the Tigers, his role in the NFL should be much different. He’ll find success in schemes that work horizontally with timing concepts.
Despite his success as Trevor Lawrence’s top target, the 5-9, 212-pound wide receiver is ideally suited to play in the slot. Rodgers does his best with designed touches in space. He’s great after the catch, utilizing his power and burst to make big gains.
A creative offensive coach will manufacture touches for Rodgers. He’s thickly built, big enough to play running back at times. With his vision after the catch, it’s easy to see him making plays catching passes out of the backfield. Because he can make plays in space, a team could also use him as a return man.
Ultimately, he’s a slot receiver in a west-coast style offense who could come in right away and contribute. He could be a lot like Ty Montgomery in year two for the packers.
