2021 NFL Mock Draft: 49ers land Mac Jones, Kyle Pitts falls to Giants
By Randy Gurzi
At No. 27, the Baltimore Ravens decide to replace Matt Judon — who left for the New England Patriots — with Miami’s Jaelan Phillips. A former five-star recruit, Phillips is a top-15 talent and might be one of the top two or three edge rushers in this class.
However, there are red flags with Phillips though, which have to be considered before taking him. Phillips once medically retired from football back in 2018 as reported by ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura. That season, while with UCLA, Phillips had been out with concussion symptoms but also dealt with an ankle and a wrist injury during his short time with the Bruins.
But, he decided not to stay away from the game long. After sitting out the entire 2019 season, Phillips returned but this time with the Miami Hurricanes. Not only did he finally have his first fully healthy campaign, but he also broke out as a star.
Phillips had 45 tackles and eight sacks ‚— with 15. total tackles going for a loss. He also recorded his first career interception.
His return was one of the feel-good stories of the season but there will be serious medical checks needed before a team takes him in Round 1. If he checks out, this kid can be an absolute stud, but if the medical concerns become a problem, it could be an issue for years to come. This one might be a bit risky, but the reward would be high.
