2021 NFL Mock Draft: 49ers land Mac Jones, Kyle Pitts falls to Giants
By Randy Gurzi
At pick No. 9, the Denver Broncos are in a tricky spot. They might not be ready to give up on Drew Lock but at the same time, can you turn your back on a franchise player when they fall into your lap?
In this mock, that’s exactly what happens as Trey lance falls despite being a top-five talent. Of course, the Niners’ unreasonable love for Mac Jones has a lot to do with (ok, everything to do with) Lance being on the board a bit longer than he should be.
There were some concerns about mechanics with Lance — which seemed nitpicky, to say the least — and he didn’t play against elite competition. For Denver, that just means they may need to take it slow with turning the offense over to him, which will make it interesting if Lock does succeed.
There will be some who bash the move and you will hear the old cliche that if you have two quarterbacks you have none. That’s foolish. If you have two quarterbacks you actually still have two and you can turn around and trade one for a king’s ransom. If Carson Wentz fetched a potential first and Sam Darnold netted a two, the Broncos would be thrilled to have Lock turn the corner while Lance also proves to be legit. Then, they would be able to move Lock for a bounty of picks and turn it over to Lance.
