NFL: The best trade in each franchise’s history
Best trade in The Washington Football Team history: Acquiring everything from the Saints
This trade was a huge win for the Washington as they pulled in the following:
- 1999 First round pick
- 1999 Third round pick
- 1999 Fourth round pick
- 1999 Fifth round pick
- 1999 Sixth round piclk
- 1999 Seventh round pick
- 2000 First round pick
- 2000 Third round pick
Ricky Williams was a star at the University of Texas. He spent four years punishing defenses and finished off his college career with a huge senior year. Williams ran for 2,124 yards and 27 touchdowns. While just about every team in the 1999 draft liked Williams, the New Orleans Saints loved him.
In an unprecedented move, the Saints decided to give up every single one of their picks in the 99 draft, they also forked over their first and third-round picks in the following draft as well. On the receiving end of the ridiculous amount of picks was the Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Football Team). In total, the Redskins picked up eight picks.
Williams turned into a great running back but not the sort of player you give up essentially your entire future for. Considering his one Pro Bowl selection, Williams could be viewed as a bust.
In hindsight, the Redskins didn’t do a great job with all those picks. Many of them were downright awful but they did get their hands on a few great players such as Champ Bailey.
Regardless of who they managed to draft, the mere fact that they turned one draft pick into eight is reason enough for this one to go down as the best and most lopsided trade in the history of the franchise.
