Chicago Bears: 5 Cornerbacks to target in 2021 NFL Draft
Kelvin Joseph hasn’t gotten a great deal of attention that some of the other top cornerbacks have received but he could be a very good player in the NFL. He measures 6-0 and weighs 197 pounds so he has good size for the position.
Joseph has all the tools to be successful in the NFL. He is quick and strong and has great athleticism. He likes to bully the receiver right off the snap and mess with the route. He is a hard hitter and is a willing tackler against the run. There are a lot of corners who hit hard on passes but shy away from the big hits against the run.
Joseph is a very confident cornerback. He feels he’ll make every play on every snap. If he does get burned, he forgets about it and doesn’t let it bother him. He also has that edge and wants to make a big hit whenever possible.
His abilities caught the attention of some of the best teams. For example, when he went up against the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2020, they targeted him just three times. That showed to be a good idea since he forced two incompletions and intercepted a pass on those three targets.
Joseph has good ball skills. He has soft, natural hands and he does a great job of going after the ball at its highest point. He had four interceptions and returned one for a touchdown in 2020.
The biggest concern with Joseph is his maturity. He originally played for LSU but played on special teams. He was suspended before the school’s bowl game and then decided to transfer.
Joseph’s red flags don’t have anything to do with serious off-field incidents. He just needs to mature a little. There are a few All-Pros who were the same but were fine when they got to the NFL. If the Bears take a chance on him they could be greatly rewarded.
