Scouting Report. Greg Newsome. 882. player. Pick Analysis. . Northwestern.

Greg Newsome II grew up in Chicago. He was so good, however, that he ended up playing his high school ball at the IMG Academy in Florida. After graduating there he came back home to play for Northwestern. Perhaps he could stay in his hometown and find his way to the Chicago Bears.

Newsome is 6-0 and weighs 192 pounds. He has long limbs and an angular frame. With that and his length and strength, he is a disruptive force on the field. He can play in many different types of formations — Cover 3, quarters coverage and press-man coverage.

Newsome does a good job of tracking the ball and positioning his body on deep throws. While he doesn’t have many interceptions in his career when you look at his film you see a lot of contested plays in which he breaks up passes.

Newsome is a physical corner who has a competitive streak. He gets in the receiver’s face and makes him uncomfortable. He also does a good job at playing his space in zone coverage.  If he does get beat a little, he does a good job of recovering with his feet and doesn’t use his hands. If he uses his hands, that leads to holding and pass interference calls.

Newsome does a good job in run support. He uses the proper technique to tackle so he doesn’t have many missed tackles.

Drafting Newsome could be a great story for him and the Chicago Bears. Having a local kid succeed in Chicago brings a positive story for a team that really needs some positivity at the moment.
