NFL Draft: Re-grading every first round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft: Number 9 overall, OT Mike McGlinchey

The quarterback may get the big bucks and the wide receivers along with the running back may get all the attention, but nothing would be possible without a stout offensive line. Going into the 2017 season, the San Francisco 49ers had just purchased a brand new toy that they wanted to try out in QB Jimmy Garoppolo. He showed tremendous promise in six games, going undefeated, but he also showed he was a bit on the brittle side.

To help Garappolo stay upright, the 49ers picked offensive linemen Mike McGlinchey. He started right from the opening gate and shored up an offensive line that sorely needed help. Two things are a killer to an offense: sacks and penalties. Smith ranked very low in both categories this past year. His five allowed sacks in 2020 tied him for 12th in the league. Despite playing the sixth most snaps with 1,091, McGlinchey only drew a yellow flag five times.

He’s the ultimate plugin and don’t worry about player. McGlinchey’s efforts have helped this franchise turn things around as they were just in the Super Bowl in 2019.

He may not receive the most praise because of the position he plays, but McGlinchey was a home run of a pick for this 49ers franchise.
