NFL Draft: Re-grading every first round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft
NFL Draft: Re-grading every first round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft: Number 30 overall, CB Mike Hughes
Cornerback Mike Hughes was just starting to get his feet wet in the league. After being taken with the 30th pick in the draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Hughes watched the first few games from the bench until he was called upon.
His performance in practice and the impressive glimpses he displayed when he did make it onto the field, was enough for the Vikings to start him during the first quarter of the 2018 season. The numbers, by all accounts, looked good. Through six games Hughes recorded one interception and 22 tackles.
Just when Minnesota thought they had something with him, he went down due to a torn ACL. Needless to say, he missed the remainder of the season. Hughes managed to make his way back the following year but was buried on the depth chart. He still found a way to make an impact with 45 tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles through 14 games.
Much like his rookie year, the injury bug came once again. This time, in the form of a neck issue that caused him to miss but four games this past season.
It’s difficult to know what to make of Hughes. The talent is obviously there but his inability to stay healthy is a major concern. With a trend forming, it’s safe to say that this hasn’t been a good draft pick. At least for now.
