NFL Draft: Re-grading every first round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft
NFL Draft: Re-grading every first round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft: Number 4 overall, CB Denzel Ward
The physicality of the NFL didn’t bother cornerback Denzel Ward. Neither did the much faster players he lined up against every Sunday. Coming out of Ohio State University, there was a reason why Ward was so highly touted and he wasted no time in his first year under the bright lights showing he was ready.
While Mayfield may have been given most of the attention for turning around the rocky 2018 of the Cleveland Browns, it was Ward who played a major part in getting things done on the other side of the field.
In one on one coverage, Ward has been a nightmare for receivers. In 2018, he racked up three interceptions in 13 games and wrapped his hands around defenders 53 total times. The stud corner even managed to get five tackles for loss. He was rewarded with a Pro Bowl selection and has been equally as good in his Sophomore and Junior years, although he has yet to be named to another Pro Bowl since his rookie year.
In 2020, when an opposing QB is throwing in his direction, the chances of a completion aren’t very high. His 64.2 passer rating when he was the primary defender was third in the entire league. His tackling skills overall still need to be worked on, but for the most part, Cleveland knocked this pick right out of the park.
With Defensive end Myles Garrett upfront and Ward manning the backend, Cleveland’s defense is going to be amongst the league’s best for years to come and Ward plays is a huge part in that.
