19. Washington Football Team: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State

Entering 2021, the Washington Football Team has one of the easiest quarterbacks in the NFL to root for set to start for them in Ryan Fitzpatrick. The veteran journeyman is fresh off a successful stint with the Miami Dolphins and will be filling the shoes of Alex Smith — while also serving as a mentor for the young Taylor Heinicke.

Last season, Heinicke was under center in the team’s playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won many fans over with his performance. Once the offseason began, Washington signed him to a two-year deal to see if the performance was a one-time thing, or if they actually have something to work with.

Even with all that being true, the Football Team (which should never, ever change their name) can’t just ignore Trey Lance if he does end up falling to them. In this mock, that’s exactly what happens as they’re on the clock at No. 19 and Lance is still there looking for a home.

The North Dakota State star was beyond dominant during his days with the Bison. He ended up throwing just one interception in his career and the idea that his mechanics need work feel greatly exaggerated. Perhaps he needs time to be comfortable at the NFL level, but that just makes this an even better fit as he can learn behind Fitzpatrick and with Heinicke there, he might not have to play at all in 2021 if head coach Ron Rivera decides he’s not ready.
