NFL Draft: Greatest pick from each franchise’s history: Kansas City Chiefs, QB Patrick Mahomes

Pick: 2017 NFL Draft, 1st round number 10 overall

Stats:

  • 14,152 passing yards
  • 114 touchdowns
  • 66.3 completion percentage

Awards:

  • 3 time Pro Bowler
  • Super Bowl champion
  • 1 time Super Bowl MVP

Something seemed a bit fishy at first. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid moved up several spots in the 2027 NFL Draft to take mostly unheralded quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Sitting there, ready to be taken, was also DeShaun Watson, a National Champion and multiple-time Heisman finalist.

Reid looked right past him and grabbed Mahomes. It was clear that he wasn’t going to start due to Alex Smith but following each practice, numerous Chiefs players would leave the facility with their eyes wide open as they raved about what he was doing while the cameras were off.

After watching Mahomes dominate the league for the past three years, those players weren’t kidding. We’re coming up on year four with Mahomes as the full-time starter and he is by far the best draft pick in Chiefs history. With three years in the books, all Mahomes has done is win a league MVP, a Super Bowl title, a Super Bowl MVP and three Pro Bowl selections.

There isn’t a single credible soul alive that doesn’t believe Mahomes isn’t the best player in the league at the moment and at only the age of 25, he’ll only continue to build on his already impressive resume.
