2. CB Steven Nelson (Released by Pittsburgh Steelers)

Last offseason, general manager Chris Ballard managed to add free-agent cornerbacks Xavier Rhodes and T.J. Carrie. Both enjoyed solid years, each totaling a pair of interceptions and returning one for a score in a Week 3 win over the Jets. And both were recently re-signed for 2021.

There are two sides to every story but the bottom line is that veteran cornerback Steven Nelson is on the market after two seasons with the Black and Gold. His 2020 showing wasn’t as effective as his first year. But it’s also worth noting that like Eric Fischer in 2013, Ballard was a member of the Chiefs’ front office in 2015 when Nelson was a third-round draft choice.

There’s still a possibility that veteran pass rusher Justin Houston winds up back with the franchise. “I like some of the guys we have right now,” said Colts’ owner Jim Irsay last week (via Kevin Hickey of ColtsWire.com). “I think it’s a talented group and Justin (Houston) could come back. There are a couple other options in free agency and certainly in the draft…”

If the veteran performer, who spent the past two seasons in Indianapolis and racked up a combined 19 sacks in 32 starts with the club, doesn’t return, could the team take a look at Buffalo’s Trent Murphy? He’s totaled a combined 26 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries in a combined six seasons with Washington and the Bills.
