Would Texans have drafted quarterback with first round pick?
The Houston Texans don’t have a first-round pick this year, but if they did, how would they have spent it?
There isn’t a franchise in a worse spot right now than the Houston Texans. They’re without a first and second-round selection in this year’s draft due to some previous trades that haven’t panned out in the way they were hoping.
A few months ago, at least people could point to the Texans having Deshaun Watson as their franchise quarterback, but that’s not a guarantee now, as he’s in serious legal trouble after being accused by 23 different women of sexual assault.
This could lead to the Texans not having Watson as their quarterback in 2021 if the case draws out into the regular season. If Houston did have their No. 3 overall pick (which previously belonged to the Dolphins and now is the 49ers’), would they have made the decision to move on from Watson?
Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson will likely be the first two players off the board, meaning Houston could have had their pick of Justin Fields, Mac Jones, or Trey Lance if they did decide to “play it safe” and find their next quarterback.
The Texans would have had a difficult decision to make if they still had a first-round pick.
Had the Texans still held onto their No. 3 pick, they’d have been pressured into making a decision on Watson before the situation has even fully played itself out. Do they play it safe and try to find someone in case Watson can’t play or would they hope everything clears up and he’s okay to be their starting quarterback?
If they didn’t go quarterback, would they have given Watson (or Tyrod Taylor) the best left tackle in the draft in Penei Sewell, gone with game-changing tight end Kyle Pitts, or given their quarterback one of the best wide receivers in the draft class?
This would have been a difficult decision for the Texans and while it’s obviously better to have a first-round selection, they might have actually dodged a bullet by not having to make that kind of decision right now.
