3-Round 2021 NFL Mock Draft: Broncos, Bears trade up for quarterbacks
By Randy Gurzi
2. New York Jets: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
Much like Trevor Lawrence to the Jaguars, Zach Wilson ended up with the New York Jets feels like a foregone conclusion. While it’s debatable whether or not he should be the second quarterback taken, there’s no denying that the team seems to be enamored with him.
There was also a recent hit that the team and player have a wink and nod style agreement. Wilson recently began to follow many people associated with the Jets on social media, which isn’t a shock at all.
With the news breaking that the Jaguars have given Lawrence their playbook, the Jets likely have let Wilson or his representation know of their plans. It’s also not unprecedented that teams let players know what’s going on.
Back in 2018, while everyone was wondering if the Cleveland Browns were going to take Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley was seen wearing a New York Giants hat. And before long, he was the second pick by the Giants, so clearly, he knew what was coming.
As for Wilson, it’s probably the same thing. New York knows he’s their guy and there’s no reason to hide it now, especially after they already traded away Sam Darnold. With Darnold out of the picture, Wilson is set to be the newest franchise quarterback for New York — they just have to hope now that this one actually works.
