New York Giants 2021 mock draft: Round 2

Round 2, Pick 42: Jayson Oweh, EDGE, Penn State

The New York Giants had one of the better defenses in 2021 led by Patrick Graham’s complex, blitz-heavy scheme. He maximizes what a player does best, and isn’t afraid to move guys around. Graham’s aggressive play-calling on third downs leaves his corners on islands and puts pressure on his edge defenders. A player like Jayson Oweh is perfect for Giants at No. 42. If he’s there, Gettleman will not hesitate to take him.

The Giants passed on Oweh’s teammate, Micha Parsons in round one, but this guy is just as physically gifted. Oweh’s insanely explosive, the 6-5, 257-pound edge defender ran a 4.36-second 40 and then jumped 39 inches in the vertical. He offers a high ceiling thanks to his elite first step, drop coverage potential, and length.

Despite his lack of sack production, Oweh offers elite potential with refinement. According to The Draft Network’s Benjamin Solak, on 190 pass rush reps, Oweh generated just five sacks. That’s a sack for every 38 rushes and he’s still developing technique. He isn’t just an athletic pass rusher, he has good functional strength against the run.

He’s not polished enough to start every down early. However, at No. 42 the G-Men will get a guy who could end the season with double-digit sacks.
