2021 NFL Draft: One perfect prospect for all 32 teams
By Randy Gurzi
Jacksonville Jaguars: Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson
Taking Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 overall should finally give the Jacksonville Jaguars a quarterback they can believe in. The Clemson product is the most pro-ready signal-caller since Andrew Luck back in 2012 and it’s almost impossible to think of him being a flop.
That’s going to be huge for Jacksonville, which has had more than their fair share of flops. As if the prospect of Lawrence wasn’t exciting enough, they also have a second pick in the first round as well as the 33rd and 45th pick in the second round.
So with four picks in the first 45 selections, they can get more than their fair share of starting-caliber players. As for their absolute best fit — that’s easy — Trevor Lawrence. In fact, that’s so easy that it feels like a cop-out to select him so instead, we will choose another “best fit” which is a player Lawrence knows well, Travis Etienne.
Etienne and Lawrence spent a lot of time together in Clemson and the running back was always there to make Lawrence’s life a little easier. In four seasons, he had 4,952 yards on the ground and 70 touchdowns. He was also a monster in the passing game out of the backfield, gaining 432 yards in 2019 and 588 last season.
Jacksonville does have James Robinson, who was really good with 1,070 yards rushing and 344 receiving as a rookie. Still, he doesn’t have the ability to break the game open the way Etienne could — which is what this offense needs.
