Chicago Bears 2021 mock draft: Round 3, Pick 93 (via Bills)

Pick Analysis. Quarterback. Davis Mills. player. Scouting Report. Stanford. 3. 871

Instead of giving up all of that draft capital to move up to the top ten to grab a quarterback prospect, the Chicago Bears might have found their franchise quarterback in the third round.

This is Pace’s last chance to find his quarterback. He said he’d draft a quarterback in every draft until he found one but he apparently thought Mitch Trubisky was the guy when he moved up to grab him in 2017. He didn’t draft any other quarterback since.

That move didn’t work so maybe if he looks later in the draft he might have better luck. He’s had good luck finding other players later in the draft so why not quarterback?

Davis Mills has all the tools to be a good NFL quarterback. What he lacks is experience, having only started 11 games over the past two seasons. That sounds awfully familiar to Trubisky’s situation, doesn’t it?

The difference is that Mills has Dalton in front of him while Trubisky had Mike Glennon. Glennon was so awful as the starter that the Bears had to end their plan to redshirt Trubisky just four games into the season. Dalton will certainly last more than four games (and there, I jinxed him).

Also, Mills has more tools than Trubisky had coming out. He has a powerful arm and can make any kind of throw needed. At 6-4, 220 pounds, he has the size you want in a quarterback. At Stanford, he played a lot under center so that part of the transition to the pro game won’t be tough.

Mills uses great technique when throwing the ball. He utilizes his lower body to drive the ball, adding velocity to the ball. This is something that Trubisky struggled with. Despite all the coaching, when on the field he just couldn’t use proper technique. His deep ball either sailed over the target or failed to reach it.

In addition to his throwing power, Mills has a good touch on the ball. Sometimes it isn’t necessary to try to throw the ball through a wall to get to the receiver. He also uses patience in the pocket and doesn’t panic. While he isn’t a big running threat, when the pocket breaks down, he is able to use his legs to slide and extend the play or tuck the ball and gain some yards.

With Mills and his inexperience, the most important person on the coaching staff will be quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. He’ll be tasked with helping Mills pick up the NFL game and refine his tools. Mills has all the tools to succeed in the NFL but DeFilippo has to help him put everything together. If he does that, then a few jobs will be saved and the Chicago Bears could turn themselves into a real contender.
