Round 3, Pick 75: Tommy Togiai, DT, Ohio State

Trysten Hill was starting to show some signs of life before being hurt last season but considering the fact that he was their top pick in 2019, he should have been showing much more than signs. Chances are, the final Rod Marinelli “pet cat” will fail to live up to the hype — like all Marinelli projects (seriously, why did they give him so much input in drafting?) so the Cowboys need another defensive tackle.

Enter Tommy Togiai out of Ohio State. His numbers won’t jump off the screen (23 tackles, three sacks as a junior) but he proved to be a stellar run defender. He might not offer a ton when it comes to rushing the passer but he’s a guy who will do the dirty work that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. Every defense needs several of those guys if they want to be succesful.

Round 3, Pick 99 (Comp Pick): James Hudson, OT, Cincinnati

In 2020, the Cowboys had a lot of injuries on the offensive line. Right tackle La’el Collins missed the entire season and left tackle Tyron Smith played in just two games. Cam Erving, who was expected to be the top reserve, also missed the majority of the season.

There were problems inside as well, but there was slightly better depth there, so it wasn’t as detrimental as losing their bookends. While both Collins and Smith are expected to be back in 2021, Smith has been banged up a lot over the past five seasons so they need to get someone who can eventually replace him — because the time to do so is approaching.

After taking care of their biggest defensive needs with their first three picks, Dallas gets someone to groom behind Smith and Collins in James Hudson from Cincinnati. Incredibly raw but super talented, Hudson could spend this season behind the starters and veteran Ty Nsekhe as he works with NFL coaches to hone his skills. Eventually, he could be a starter for Dallas, and right now, he would offer some talent on the bench to turn to if they have more injury issues this year.
