Final 2021 NFL Mock Draft: Cardinals shock everyone at No. 16

16. Arizona Cardinals: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama

Especially considering that this is the same Arizona Cardinals team that traded for DeAndre Hopkins last offseason, wide receiver would hardly be considered their top need. Hopkins and Christian Kirk are both solid weapons and this is a roster that needs more help either on defense or the offensive line to get closer to their ceiling.

While that may be the reality of what they should do, the reality of what it seems as if they’re going to do is to ensure that their expensive investment in Kyler Murray is worthwhile. They’ve clearly been helping him in every way possible to succeed but he still needs to show more as a passer.

That’s why I have them taking DeVonta Smith with the No. 16 pick. The Heisman Trophy winner’s fall down the board ultimately isn’t that surprising given the concerns about his slight frame and overall size.

However, his talent also can’t be denied. Smith is an elite route-runner with the ability to get loose at any level of the field and still create after the catch. Pairing him with Hopkins would be scary as they complement each other well, even if it’s not the correct pick for what Arizona needs to do.
