Chicago Bears trade up for Justin Fields in 2021 NFL Draft: Grading the Pick
The Chicago Bears once again got aggressive and made a trade to land Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Grading the Pick.
If you thought the Chicago Bears were going to stand pat in the draft, leave it to Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace to shock you again by taking Justin Fields. By trading a future first and fourth-rounder while giving up a fifth-rounder this year, the Bears swapped with the Giants and selected the Ohio State quarterback.
The move is shocking considering the last time the Bears traded up for a quarterback; they chose Mitchell Trubisky. Thankfully for Bears fans, Fields has a greater resume and has actually played in big games while showcasing a level of toughness that cannot be taught.
If you need more proof, watch the semi-final game between Ohio State and Clemson and see just what Fields endured and overcame. That gives the Bears high marks for taking a quarterback that was given high marks heading into the draft.
Grade for the Chicago Bears trading up for Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft
The Chicago Bears landed a player with the severe potential to be the next franchise quarterback in the Windy City. Also, it filled a need that the Bears have desperately been searching for over an extended period of time. With Andy Dalton and Nick Foles currently on the roster, it was a given fact that the Bears had to make changes and find a player that would be a difference-maker.
What Nagy does now to surround Fields and enhance his growth remains to be seen, and he must be given credit for making a move that no one expected them to do. The offensive line will need tweaking and the defense needs to have fresh blood installed.
Meanwhile, there may be a reason to finally celebrate in the Windy City as the Bears have found a player worth making the trade for.
