New England Patriots select Mac Jones in 2021 NFL Draft: Grading the Pick
The New England Patriots stayed pat and took their potential future franchise quarterback in Alabama’s Mac Jones. Grading the Pick
Leave it to Bill Belichick to shock the world and actually take a first-round quarterback, and they took a familiar face in Alabama’s Mac Jones. It is safe to assume that Nick Saban has likely spoken up about Jones, and thus he heads to the house of Saban’s closest friend.
Relationships aside, this is a move that the Patriots didn’t have to get aggressive over as they just stayed where they were, and the chips fell to them. Now, New England has a player who they believe can be the next great Patriots quarterback and continue a legacy that a reigning Super Bowl MVP with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers once had in Foxborough.
Mac Jones was a winner in college and winning is what the Patriots had in mind when they made the selection. After all, for most of the last two decades, they were the big bad winners in the NFL.
Grade for the New England Patriots taking Mac Jones at No. 15 in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Jones is a reigning national champion where he orchestrated one of the greatest offenses in college football history. Additionally, he stayed true to his commitment to the Tide and made the most of his opportunity. Now, he heads to New England with a lot on his shoulders.
The Patriots went ballistic in free agency in adding two star tight ends and good wide receivers. Additionally, New England added fresh blood to the defense to aid in Jones’ growth. In other words, though Jones is a rookie, the expectations are still existing.
The New England Patriots have now found what appears to be a franchise quarterback. If Mac Jones can provide even a slice of success that Tom Brady once brought to New England, the Patriots’ run of excellence may have just reinvigorated, and that would not be good news for the NFL.
