NFL Draft: Redrafting the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft 22. Carson Wentz

Originally selected 2nd overall (-20)

The Washington Football Team drafted Josh Doctson with the 22nd pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. This wasn’t an awful pick, but in the long term, his career hasn’t panned out at the NFL level. Beyond that, this team seemingly didn’t need him and wideout in the first place.

Rather, they would desperately need a quarterback down the road. Kirk Cousins was on the team in 2016, his last year in DC. After Cousins, there have been a handful of underwhelming options under center for this Washington Franchise.

Queue Carson Wentz.

At this point, you’ve either forgotten about Wentz or you’re furious that I haven’t given him to any of the teams in this draft so far. It’s hard to see any in between there. But after a bad 2020 season, Wentz’s value is in the toilet.

That said, he was a really solid quarterback for his first couple of years in the league, leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl that he wouldn’t play in as a result of an injury. Somehow, Nick Foles would win it, but that’s an entirely different story.

Wentz had a strong season in 2017, being recognized with a Second-Team All-Pro selection as well as an invitation to the Pro Bowl. Injuries would derail his career from there, but this is an entirely hypothetical situation, so who’s to say they would happen again?

Wentz may not have become the greatest QB of all time, but he’s better than anybody on the Washington Football Team since Cousins.
