NFL Draft: Redrafting the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft 28. Taylor Decker

Originally selected 16th overall (-12)

The story of the San Francisco 49ers’ original 27th overall pick in 2016 is not a happy one. Unfortunately for them, Joshua Garnett’s career would not be long-lived in the NFL and it would be riddled with injuries.

It’s unclear whether or not this was a good pick from a talent perspective, but due to injuries, we’d never have the chance to find out.

That said, they’ll get a second shot in this redraft scenario to pick up a player who didn’t suffer from injury-related issues. That player will be Taylor Decker. Decker Originally, Decker went to the Detroit Lions with the 16th overall pick but will fall to the 28th pick in this draft, which may end up being a positive for him.

Decker has ended up being a solid offensive lineman for the Lions. In 2020, they signed him to a five-year, $70 million deal, showing that they were ready to keep him around for the long haul. That said, he’ll get a chance to be part of a winning team in San Fran.

The 49ers were well-coached, and Decker would only add to an already strong offensive line. He doesn’t directly fill the hole left by offensive guard Joshua Garnett, as Decker is a tackle, but he may be more effective for his respective position.
