The San Francisco 49ers needed better quarterback play and mortgaged their future for the third overall pick and North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. Grading the Pick.

The San Francisco 49ers shocked the football world by moving a golden gate package to the Miami Dolphins for the rights to get the third overall pick. As such, they are now placing their faith in North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.

For the cost of three first-rounders and change, San Francisco is essentially tapping Lance as the missing piece to a team that just two seasons ago was in Miami and choked a 4th quarter lead to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

Eventually, Jimmy Garoppolo will likely be relegated to bench duty while Lance takes over. With every pick comes a letter grade, and San Francisco was graded on both the trade and the pick. Check it out.

To pay this much to shoot up the draft board from 12th to 3rd overall means San Francisco was certainly desperate for good quarterback play. Now, they have Lance in the lineup, and to their credit, there is a lot to like in Lance’s tape.

Lance is a late bloomer that garnered national attention due to his physical abilities. He essentially was a hotshot quarterback that also won a national championship, albeit at a lower level. In 2019, Lance threw 28 touchdowns and ZERO interceptions while leading the Bison to a 28-20 national championship victory over James Madison.

Lance also has a strong arm and high athletic ability. Though he’s likely going to face significantly greater talent than what he faced in college, his skill set is what head coach Kyle Shanahan covets and will use to his advantage in a crowded NFC North.

San Francisco made an aggressive move to go up the draft board and get their quarterback of the future. Given how heavy the investment is, it had better pay off for the 49ers as the Dolphins are the beneficiary of several picks that could help them transcend if San Francisco descends. There’s a lot of pressure on Lance, and it can only be alleviated if the team wins.
