2021 NFL Draft: One legend that each first round draft pick reminds us of
NFL Draft 2021: Chicago Bears pick Justin Fields, compares to Steve Young
If we removed the fact that Steve Young and Justin Fields throw a football with the opposite hand, you’ll notice that the pair have a ton of similarities.
For starters, both Fields and Young are the definition of dual-threat quarterbacks. Unlike signal-callers such as Lamar Jackson and Michael Vick who are primarily looking to run, Fields surveys the landscape first. When no one is available, he’ll make a quick dash for a first down. In three seasons with Ohio State, Fields never rushed for less than 250 yards.
As for Young, when he played and started in at least 11 of his team’s games, he rushed for 250 yards or more yards during the season eight times. Their ability to run the ball never seemed to hinder their ability to accurately find their man down the field as Fields never completed less than 67.2 percent of his passes.
More than anything, Fields is just a big physical player who has no problem running through defenders. His ability to keep the defense off balance is very much similar to what Young did for over a decade in the NFL. If he simply keeps his head on straight, the Chicago Bears could be in line for some success at the QB position for a change.
