The Green Bay Packers are in a bind with Aaron Rodgers and they might end up regretting passing on the 49ers’ trade offer for the reigning MVP.

Hours before the 2021 NFL Draft was set to return, all kinds of Aaron Rodgers-related drama hit the fan. One of the biggest stories circulating was that the San Francisco 49ers offered the Green Bay Packers the No. 3 overall pick plus other picks for Rodgers. Green Bay turned down the offer, but this could be a move they live to regret.

Rodgers is clearly unhappy with the team he’s spent the last 16 years with and he has the leverage over the Packers right now.

He could opt for retirement if he ends up landing the Jeopardy! gig or he could simply refuse to play unless he’s traded.

By trading Rodgers to the 49ers, the Packers could have moved onto the Jordan Love era of Green Bay football. They believe that Love is Rodgers’ successor and trading with the Niners would have given them the tools to build around their newest signal-caller.

At pick No. 3, the Packers wouldn’t have had to go with a quarterback because they already have who they believe is the right man for the job. Instead, they could have gone with Kyle Pitts or one of the top three receivers in the draft. They could have even made it a point to bring in Penei Sewell and further shore up the offensive line.

The Green Bay Packers will live to regret not accepting the 49ers’ trade offer.

Rodgers is coming off an MVP season in which he threw for 48 touchdowns and just five interceptions while leading the Packers to their second straight NFC Championship. It makes perfect sense that he was frustrated about the team taking his successor last year without mentioning it to him first and if he’s truly ready to move on, Green Bay should move on as well.

Unlike most teams who find themselves with an unhappy quarterback, Green Bay has who they believe is their guy moving forward. If they think Love is ready to play, then what are they waiting for?

The Packers had a chance to make a big move and build around Love but they failed to do so. Now they’re in a situation where they need to either show their commitment to Rodgers by extending him and trading Love or trading Rodgers to another team after he won the league MVP.
