4. New York Giants

The New York Giants signed two wide receivers in free agency, bringing in outside threat Kenny Golladay from Detroit on a mega deal and speedster John Ross from Cincinnati, signing him to a modest contract. On top of that, they also signed former Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph to all but overload their offense with talent and pass catchers.

Even after that, many fans were hopeful that the Giants would take DeVonta Smith, the Heisman Trophy-winning receiver from Alabama, with the No. 11 pick. Instead, the Eagles traded up to No. 10, switching places with the Cowboys, and took Smith, thus preventing the Giants from taking him and avoiding having to play him twice a year.

New York then traded down to No. 20 with the Bears, who took quarterback Justin Fields. Once the Giants were on the clock, the overwhelming expectation was that they would go with edge rusher Kwity Paye. Instead, the Giants took Florida receiver Kadarius Toney.

While Toney is by no means a bad player, New York’s depth chart is already full of wide receivers, and their lack of help off the edge was something that should have been addressed. They did end up taking Azeez Ojulari in the second round but reaching for a receiver in the first round left a lot of fans groaning.

3. Philadelphia Eagles

The video of Howie Roseman trotting around the war room looking for fist bumps while everyone else looks melancholy tells the whole story. They traded up and got their guy at receiver, DeVonta Smith, which actually made a lot of fans happy. Wide receiver was a huge need for the Eagles and they got a former teammate of Jalen Hurts. Unfortunately, it was a dumpster fire from there.

Landon Dickerson is a good center, so by no means is this a knock on his ability; but the Eagles had far more pressing needs than an interior offensive lineman at this point. Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, UCF safety Richie Grant, and Florida State cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. were all on the board when the Eagles picked at No. 37 and all play a position that the Eagles need help at.

It was more of the same in the third round, drafting defensive tackle Milton Williams while guys like Divine Deablo and Chazz Surratt were still on the board.

I don’t know what the Eagles are doing but this draft hasn’t made them better. As a matter of fact, the Washington Football Team is the only team in the NFC East having a really good draft. The aforementioned Giants dropped the ball in the first round, and Dallas has been abysmal, as well. And speaking of the Cowboys…
