NFL Draft: Biggest bust from each franchise’s history
Biggest NFL Draft bust from New York Giants history: Cedric Jones, DE
Stats:
- 15 sacks
- 151 tackles
By no means were the New York Giants ready to compete for titles, but they appeared to be putting all of the pieces in place. In 1993, the franchise grabbed future Hall of Fame pass rusher Michael Strahan. While he was dominant, the franchise realized that having two guys who could terrorize opposing QBs was better than one. In 1996, Cedric Jones was believed to be the perfect pairing with Strahan. However, he proved to be a dud.
In an unbelievable turn of events, the number five overall pick in the 1996 draft was legally blind in one eye. That, in turn, meant he could only play on the right side of the defensive line. Still, even with that tragic news, the Giants held out hope that he could become a dominant player in the league. That said, they quickly realized that he wasn’t going to cut it. Jones didn’t register a single sack in his first two years in the league. He would finally get on the board in year three, nabbing four sacks on the year but still, his production was putrid.
During his best season, Jones scored 7.5 sacks in 1999 but was instantly brought back down to earth the following year with 3.5. The turn of the new Millenium would be the last time Jones was seen on an NFL field. It was a quick career for the man who is widely regarded as the biggest bust in New York Giants history.
