Biggest NFL Draft bust from Chicago Bears history: Mitchell Trubisky, QB

Stats:

  • 10,609 passing yards
  • 64 touchdowns
  • 37 interceptions

No, this isn’t a case of living in the moment. Recently let go quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is, in fact, the biggest bust in the history of the Chicago Bears.

Trubisky was an interesting prospect out of North Carolina. For two years he sat behind Marquise Williamson before getting his chance. While it wouldn’t appear to be a big deal, it is once you realize Williamson wasn’t an NFL level quarterback. He went undrafted in 2016 and had a cup of coffee with the Green Bay Packers. From there, he latched on with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League before ultimately landing in the XFL. That’s the player Trubisky couldn’t beat out for the starting job.

Regardless of that, he balled out in 2016, throwing for 3,748 yards to go along with 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. It was love at first sight for the Bears as they moved up to the second pick in the 2017 NFL Draft to take him. On the way to skipping the field, the Bears bypassed Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes.

Don’t let the one Pro Bowl appearance in 2018 fool you, Trubisky was a disaster during his time in Chi-town. He was unassertive, tentative and refused to take any risks both passing or running the ball. After another subpar season, Trubisky opted to sign with the Buffalo Bills to back up Josh Allen as opposed to staying put in Chicago to compete for the starting job.

All in all, it was the worst possible scenario for the Bears. With that said, at least Trubisky won the Nickelodeon NVP award.
